Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung: The Return of the V8 Coupe

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is redefining super coupes with its return to the iconic V8. This new variant promises not only exhilarating performance but also a potent blend of efficiency and modern engineering tailored to meet the expectations of discerning enthusiasts.

At the heart of the CLE 646 lies an advanced iteration of Mercedes-Benz's 4-litre twin-turbo M177 Evo engine, which first debuted with 530bhp in the standard Mercedes S-Class. Tuned for this model, the V8 delivers an impressive 636bhp and 627lb ft of torque, a feat made possible through careful refinements from AMG. Thanks to its lighter flat-plane crank design, the engine meets stricter Euro 7 emissions standards while enhancing performance.

The engine's integration includes a 48-volt electrical system and a starter generator, enhancing efficiency and contributing up to 23 additional horsepower. These upgrades propel the CLE 646 from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 193 mph—a true testament to its engineering prowess.

To facilitate the massive power output and cooling needs of the V8, the CLE 646 features a dramatically modified front bumper. The design emphasizes aerodynamics and includes a revised Panamericana grille, extensive cooling ducts, and a prominent splitter to optimize brake cooling. This is paired with a significant vent on the bonnet to direct cooling air towards the engine's twin-turbochargers.

Dimensionally, the CLE 646 is tailored for performance, measuring 60mm wider than the CLE 53. It sports bespoke front wings equipped with vents crafted to manage pressure in the wheel well, enhancing stability at high speeds. The imposing rear wing and stacked quad exhaust further amplify its aggressive stance, while the design generates 250kg of downforce at its maximum speed.

Weight-saving strategies are also evident in the CLE 646, which is 170kg lighter than its CLE 53 counterpart. The extensive use of carbon fibre in the wings, bonnet, and interior as well as polycarbonate windows contributes to this reduction, though the overall weight still stands at 1895kg.

From a handling perspective, the CLE 646 adopts a rear-wheel-drive setup, relinquishing the front axle of the previous 4Matic system. This change enhances driving dynamics, supported by four-way coilovers designed in cooperation with KW Automotive for adjustable ride settings. Reduced ride heights of 16mm at the rear and 22mm at the front contribute to a more aggressive stance and improved center of gravity, while the nine-stage traction control system assists drivers in customizing performance based on their skill level. Power is channeled through an AMG 9-speed TCT transmission and electronically controlled limited-slip differential, ensuring precise power distribution.

The vehicle rolls on 20-inch forged wheels outfitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, notably featuring wide rear tires just shy of those used on high-performance models like the Lamborghini Revuelto. This setup is complemented by robust ceramic brakes equipped with 420mm front discs and six-piston calipers, alongside 360mm rear discs.

Inside, the CLE 646 focuses on a stripped-down performance-oriented layout. It boasts a two-seater configuration, incorporating carbon fiber components and new bucket seats complete with six-point harnesses. While much of the aesthetic aligns closely with the standard CLE model, a roll cage and harness bar replace rear seating for enhanced safety and rigidity.

Mercedes-AMG plans to produce only 30 units of the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, making it the rarest offering in AMG history and a proud addition to the 'Mythos' lineage that includes the limited-production PureSpeed Roadster. This figure even surpasses the exclusivity of the 75-unit McLaren-Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss.

While production of the CLE 646 is already complete, enthusiasts can anticipate the forthcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 coupe, which will showcase the modified V8 in a more accessible platform. However, those expecting all the performance of the top-tier CLE 646 might find a slightly lower output in the upcoming model.
