Chery is set to bolster its market presence with new models, despite increased competition from Geely and other Chinese brands in Australia.

Chery Aims for a Strong Position Amidst Rising Competition from Geely and New Model Launches

Chery remains determined to secure a top position in Australia's automotive market, even as new competition emerges from fellow Chinese brand Geely. Last year, Chery ranked 13th in overall vehicle sales, delivering 34,889 units. As of this year, it has climbed into ninth place, trailing behind industry giants like Toyota, BYD, and Kia, with 33,817 units sold so far.

Current Market Standing

Throughout 2023, Chery consistently finished between eighth and tenth in the monthly sales rankings. This consistency reflects not just a solid product lineup but also effective marketing strategies and growing brand recognition among consumers. However, in August, Chery faced a significant setback as a surge in Geely's sales pushed it out of the top ten. Geely, which started the year in 22nd place, has impressively ascended to the tenth spot within seven months, primarily driven by a growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs)—a segment where Chery currently has limited offerings. As consumer preferences increasingly shift toward sustainable options, this gap in EV representation could prove to be a critical vulnerability for Chery.

Strategic Insights from Leadership

Despite this setback, Chery sees a clear distinction in their competition. Lucas Harris, Chery Motor Australia's chief operating officer, expressed confidence regarding their standing, emphasizing that “one swallow doesn’t make a summer.” He highlighted the importance of sustained performance over time rather than short-lived success. This sentiment underscores a crucial point: market fluctuations can often be misleading, and a single surge from a competitor doesn’t necessarily indicate a long-term shift.

Harris also revealed that Chery has significant product launches planned that could shift their market position dramatically. Such planning is essential in a sector that's quick to evolve, where new models can change consumer sentiment almost overnight. Chery's upcoming introduction of the Stockman, their first utility vehicle (ute), comes at a critical time. Set to compete against heavy hitters like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, the Stockman represents Chery’s commitment to diversifying its offerings while capturing a lucrative segment of the market.

Impacts of Increasing Competition

The effectiveness of the Stockman’s launch remains to be seen. While the BYD Shark 6 achieved 9,493 deliveries in the first half of this year, closely trailing the Mitsubishi Triton, the MG U9 lagged with only 918 deliveries. Chery plans to introduce the Stockman range first with a diesel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, expanding to petrol-PHEV options by 2027. Additionally, the Chery Q electric hatch is anticipated to join the lineup next year. This timing might be crucial; as EV adoption accelerates, waiting too long to enter the market could diminish Chery's competitiveness. And those who think EV demand is just a passing trend are likely underestimating consumer shifts.

While Geely has already rolled out an electric hatch and a PHEV sedan, it currently lacks a ute, giving Chery a momentary edge in that segment. The race, however, is intensifying. Chery's ambition to place in the top five by 2027 is a sizable challenge amidst this crowded field. The likes of GWM, which aspires to penetrate the top three, only complicate the competitive dynamics.

Mr. Harris acknowledged the competitive landscape posed by other Chinese brands. “We would be foolish to say no,” he remarked. With multiple brands now vying for a share of the market, he pointed out that the quality and competitiveness of these manufacturers necessitate constant vigilance and adaptation. This requires not just innovation in products but also agility in strategy—an ongoing challenge in the fast-paced automotive industry.

Brand Expansion and Customer Experience

Chery is not just focusing on its core products but also plans to launch several new brands, including Lepas this year, with more slated for 2027. This approach reflects a strategy that goes beyond conventional market competition; it's about creating a broader ecosystem of brands. With potential brand overlap, Chery aims to stand out through exceptional aftersales service. Mr. Harris sees this commitment as pivotal in gaining and retaining customer loyalty. “Right now, we have to conquest 100 percent of our sales,” he explained, “but we’d like to move to a point where we earn right for repurchase.” If you're working in this space, understanding the importance of customer satisfaction is key. Brands that engage positively with their consumers tend to create lasting relationships.

Chery’s approach represents more than just product diversification; it's an understanding of the necessity for solid support systems that enhance the ownership journey. Mr. Harris asserted that being able to capitalize on Chery's existing backend systems for the new Lepas brand will provide distinct strategic advantages, allowing for improved customer engagement and greater operational efficiency. This kind of operational alignment often gets overlooked but can shape the user experience fundamentally.

Outlook and Significance

Chery's journey in the Australian automotive market is one to watch. Its push for a higher market standing amidst stiff competition poses both risks and opportunities. The brand's commitment to product diversification and improved customer service is a strong strategy. However, whether Chery can maintain momentum in the face of fierce competitors like Geely remains to be seen. Consumer trends indicate a growing preference for brands that prioritize sustainability and quality, so Chery's choices in the next few years will be critical.
