At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, BYD showcased its most extensive lineup of electric commercial vehicles, led by the ETT 44, a heavy-duty truck designed to cater to Europe’s trucking demands. With a remarkable range of up to 600 kilometers and cutting-edge megawatt charging technology, BYD is making a significant entry into the competitive European heavy-truck market.

Key Specifications of the ETT 44

The ETT 44 is engineered as a 4x2 tractor capable of handling combinations of up to 44 tonnes. It boasts a 651 kWh Blade Battery integrated into an 851V system, delivering a rated power of 743 PS and peak power reaching 1,000 PS. With a long warranty of 10 years or up to 1.2 million kilometers, BYD offers potential customers peace of mind alongside its performance.

A standard CCS2 DC charger allows the ETT 44 to draw up to 420 kW, achieving a charge from 20% to 80% in about an hour. However, its real standout feature is compatibility with BYD’s Megawatt Charging System, capable of pulling over 1.5 MW and accomplishing the same charge in roughly 20 minutes. This rapid charging translates to an additional 400 kilometers of range in just half an hour, transforming how freight operations can efficiently manage their downtime.

Expanding Beyond Flagship Products

BYD isn't merely introducing a single product; it’s rolling out a comprehensive solution. The ETT 44 is part of a more extensive portfolio, which includes 4x2 and 6x2 rigid trucks, weighing up to 26 tonnes in swap body and hooklift configurations. Other offerings include the E-Vali light commercial van and the EYT 2.0 electric yard tractor, demonstrating BYD's commitment to covering various needs within urban and distribution hub logistics across Europe, ranging from 3.5 to 44 tonnes.

The company highlights the ETT 44’s suite of driver-assistance and safety features, such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and blind-spot detection. BYD markets these vehicles not just in terms of specifications but as part of a “Total Cost of Mobility” model, bundling aspects like the vehicles themselves, Blade batteries, megawatt chargers, stationary energy storage solutions, and financing options.

Navigating the Competitive Landscape

The electric heavy-truck market in Europe is increasingly crowded, with competitors like Daimler Truck’s eActros 600, Volvo’s FH Electric, Scania, and MAN also pushing for prominence with their own electric tractors. BYD’s specifications, particularly the 600 km range and 1.5 MW charging capability, position it competitively against these offerings. Most notably, BYD's infrastructure for charging stands out as a key differentiator, as none of the traditional manufacturers have developed such an extensive charging network independently.

BYD has rapidly established a foothold in megawatt charging, recently deploying 10,000 of its 1,500 kW units in just five months and pledging to roll out 15,000 megawatt chargers across China. This edge in charging infrastructure brings real operational advantages, especially since uptime is critical for freight economics; the faster trucks can charge, the more productivity can be achieved.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of the ETT 44 signals BYD’s strong commitment to the European trucking market. While Tesla prepares to launch its own Semi in Europe, BYD's head start in charging infrastructure positions it well against such competition. Fleet operators prioritize uptime and charging efficiency, making BYD's integrated approach particularly compelling, as they manage both the vehicle and its charging ecosystem.

However, the regulatory landscape is another significant consideration. Europe has shown reluctance towards potential overreliance on Chinese manufacturers, with tariffs already impacting the market. As BYD seeks to establish itself, it will need to navigate these complexities while demonstrating the added value of its comprehensive electric solutions.

Overall, the ETT 44 offers a striking mix of technology and practicality, positioning BYD as a formidable player in the electric heavy-duty truck segment.
