BMW i3 Redefines the 3 Series with Impressive Range and Electric Performance

BMW has unveiled its latest fully electric model, the i3, which emerges as part of the iconic 3 Series lineup, now enhanced by the company’s Neue Klasse architecture. This iteration blends the characteristic driving dynamics of the 3 Series with cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, promising a remarkable range of up to 912 km based on WLTP standards and supporting rapid DC fast charging at 400 kW.

Initially, consumers can choose between two variants: the BMW i3 50 xDrive and the i3 40 xDrive. In addition to these electric models, BMW plans to introduce traditional gasoline engines complemented by 48V mild-hybrid technology, with plans for a plug-in hybrid model in the near future.

Among the gasoline lineup, the M350 xDrive stands out by incorporating M Performance hardware, featuring a six-cylinder engine and a distinct Drift Moment feature aimed at enhancing the performance of its rear wheels.

A Fresh Take on 3 Series Design

Adhering to BMW’s latest design language, the new 3 Series maintains the iconic proportions synonymous with the model while introducing a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs that emphasize its sporty demeanor. The updated design includes a set-back glasshouse and pronounced wheel arches, giving the vehicle an athletic stance.

The new 3 Series is powered by BMW Operating System X, which integrates the latest BMW Panoramic iDrive. This user interface supports a blend of touch, haptic feedback, and voice commands, bolstered by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant for improved interactivity.

Notably, the integration of Amazon Alexa+ AI enriches voice-control features, fostering conversational exchanges with the vehicle. Built upon the Android Open Source Project, this operating system allows for regular software and feature updates, ensuring continuous improvements over time.

Optional enhancements under BMW Digital Premium include advanced navigation through BMW Maps and a Security Assistant, providing added value to drivers.

High-Performance Electric Powertrain

The introduction of the fully electric BMW i3 significantly transforms the 3 Series lineup. Leveraging the Neue Klasse architecture, the i3 integrates sixth-generation eDrive technology featuring new cylindrical-cell high-voltage batteries, efficient electric motors, and an 800-volt electrical system with bidirectional charging capabilities.

At launch, both i3 models feature a dual-motor setup on the front and rear axles. The i3 50 xDrive boasts 345 kW, equivalent to 469 hp, paired with 645 Nm of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.7 seconds. Its spacious 108.7-kWh battery provides a remarkable WLTP range of up to 912 km, with the ability to gain 423 km (263 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging at a fast DC station.

The i3 40 xDrive variant, on the other hand, delivers 275 kW (374 hp) and is equipped with an 82.8-kWh battery, offering a maximum range of 710 km (441 miles). BMW also intends to expand the i3 lineup with the addition of the M Performance variant, the i3 M60 xDrive, slated for release in 2027.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics with Heart of Joy Technology

BMW leverages its new i3 to highlight its Heart of Joy control technology, developed specifically to maximize the potential of its electric drive architecture. This system combines drive-system and driving-dynamics functions into a singular high-performance computing unit, delivering a tenfold increase in processing speed compared to earlier systems. The goal here is to preserve the precise handling and responsiveness that define the 3 Series while fully utilizing the benefits offered by an electric drivetrain.

For traditional models, BMW adopts an intelligent Driving Stack that adapts to each powertrain type. Both adaptive suspension and M suspension options will be available on combustion models, with adaptive M suspension standard on the M350 xDrive and offered as an option for the all-wheel-drive i3.

Expanded Driver Assistance Features

The new BMW 3 Series enhances its safety and convenience offerings with a suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies. Promising support for Level 2 automation, these models introduce active safety systems and BMW's Symbiotic Drive technology for improved driver-vehicle interactions.

A standout feature is the Motorway Assistant, enabling hands-free driving at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph) across 21 countries. Looking ahead, additional features expected by 2027 will facilitate navigation-guided, partially automated driving in urban environments.

Production of the BMW i3 Starts in Munich

Production for the new BMW i3 takes place at BMW Group Plant Munich, the company’s original manufacturing site for over a century. This facility began assembling BMW vehicles in 1975 with the first 3 Series, and now it enters a new chapter with the launch of its first fully electric iteration.

Looking towards the future, BMW aims to transition this plant entirely toward Neue Klasse electric vehicles by 2027. Meanwhile, the combustion variants will be manufactured at the Dingolfing plant in Bavaria, with components sourced from the Steyr facility in Austria, and high-voltage batteries produced at a new site in Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Bavaria.
