The BYD Shark plug-in hybrid pick-up has received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, highlighting its advanced safety features and performance.

BYD's Shark plug-in hybrid pick-up has recently secured a prestigious five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, solidifying its status as a formidable contender in the pick-up market. This rating underscores the model's commitment to exceptional crash safety, child protection, and advanced driver aids as BYD continues to broaden its footprint in Europe.
The Shark DMO garnered impressive scores across all categories of the Euro NCAP assessment. It achieved an 86% rating in Child Occupant Protection and 87% in Safety Assist. Additionally, it scored 82% for Adult Occupant Protection and 74% for Vulnerable Road User Protection.
This accolade follows a favorable evaluation from the Australasian safety organization ANCAP and builds upon further assessments conducted by Euro NCAP.
When it comes to crash performance, Euro NCAP emphasized the Shark’s capability in various tests, including frontal-offset, full-width frontal, and side impacts. Its effectiveness in protecting child occupants was also noted, with promising results for 6- and 10-year-old child dummies during side-impact testing.
A standout feature is the child presence detection system, alerting drivers if it senses a child left inside the vehicle, reinforcing its safety credentials.
The Shark’s advanced driver assistance systems played a crucial role in achieving its five-star rating. The autonomous emergency braking system received commendations for its responsiveness to cyclists, contributing positively to the model's 74% score for Vulnerable Road User Protection.
Euro NCAP recognized the emergency braking system's efficiency in managing interactions with other vehicles, along with the lane-departure support and speed assistance systems, the latter of which adjusts the speed limiter based on surrounding traffic conditions.
Apart from its safety features, the BYD Shark is crafted to blend the utility of traditional work trucks with the comfort and efficiency commonly associated with electrified vehicles.
Its Super Hybrid DMO powertrain pairs two electric motors with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine. The front motor generates 231PS with 310Nm of torque, and the rear provides 204PS and 340Nm, culminating in a total output of 436PS and 650Nm of torque, enabling a 0-62mph time of just 5.7 seconds.
Equipped with a 32.2kWh BYD Blade Battery, the Shark boasts an electric-only range of up to 90km. When both the battery is fully charged and the fuel tank is full, the integrated powertrain offers a combined range of up to 419 miles.
Notably, the battery is integrated into the vehicle's platform through BYD's Cell-to-Chassis technology, which enhances the structural integrity of the pick-up.
The Shark features a double-cab layout, comfortably seating five passengers, appealing to customers seeking a multi-functional vehicle for both work and leisure.
Inside, the vehicle offers vegan-leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, and a high-quality 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system. Key technological highlights include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a substantial 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen equipped with navigation, voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Other noteworthy features encompass a 50W wireless smartphone charger, remote climate control via the BYD app, keyless entry and ignition, and a 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking aids.
The Shark also provides Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing users to power external devices through the vehicle’s outlets, enhancing its versatility for work sites and outdoor activities.
This rating represents BYD's ninth five-star endorsement since it entered the European passenger vehicle market in 2022. Other five-star rated models from BYD include the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Seal, Seal U DM-i, and Sealion 7, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to safety and electrified technology.
Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice President, remarked that this rating showcases the effectiveness of the company’s R&D efforts in delivering tangible benefits for users. She also highlighted the Shark's combination of work-ready capabilities, SUV-like comfort, and electric efficiency.
The BYD Shark DMO is available for order in the UK starting at £47,295, VAT included. With its impressive five-star Euro NCAP rating and powerful hybrid powertrain, it presents a compelling alternative to the conventional diesel pick-up segment.
