Volvo Cars is set to expand its electrified offerings with new plug-in hybrid versions of its acclaimed XC60 and XC90 models. These updated vehicles not only increase electric driving capabilities but also integrate existing petrol engine technology, creating a pragmatic transition toward an all-electric future.

In the U.S. market, the XC60 is now capable of traveling up to 78 miles purely on electric power, while the XC90 offers an impressive 73 miles per charge. This positions them as the leaders in electric range among plug-in hybrids available in the country.

For European consumers, the quoted electric ranges stand at up to 200 km (124 miles) for the XC60 and 160 km (99 miles) for the XC90, varying by market and specific configurations.

Significant Electric Range Enhancements

The most noteworthy enhancement in the XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids is the substantial increase in their electric range, reportedly more than double that of previous models. This upgrade is a result of a larger, floor-integrated battery paired with a more powerful electric motor.

When electric energy is low or additional power is needed, the traditional petrol engine takes over seamlessly. This combination allows both models to fulfill many daily driving needs solely on electric power, while also providing the flexibility of an internal-combustion engine for longer journeys.

Volvo frames these new plug-in hybrids as pivotal in its journey towards fully electric vehicles, enabling customers to drive shorter commutes and weekend trips with zero tailpipe emissions.

The XC60 and XC90 will both still be available with mild-hybrid powertrains as an option.

Volvo sees the long-range XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids as more than enhancements—they reflect a strategic move toward full electrification. “The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” stated Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV category.”

Both models will benefit from regular over-the-air software updates, allowing for improved features and functions post-purchase.

Production Timeline and Market Introduction

Order books for the XC60 and XC90, including special Black Edition models, are set to open in selected markets. Production is expected to commence later this year. In the U.S., the XC60 and XC90 T8 AWD Long Range plug-in hybrids are anticipated to enter production this fall, with customer deliveries slated to begin in early 2027.
