Geely introduces its 2,250 kW Smart Charge technology, aiming to redefine EV charging speed and efficiency, competing squarely with BYD's offerings.

In a bold move to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging capabilities, Geely has launched its Smart Charge technology, boasting a peak output of 2,250 kW. This new system not only elevates charging power to new heights but also integrates advanced features, including intelligent monitoring and thermal management, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to BYD's current offerings.
Setting New Standards in Charging Power
The centerpiece of Geely's initiative is its fifth-generation Smart Charging Station, featuring a single connector capable of delivering a staggering 2,250 kW. This milestone surpasses BYD's recently introduced 1,500 kW Flash Charging system. However, the actual performance during charging sessions will depend on several variables, including the vehicle's battery capacity and environmental conditions.
To complement this robust charging technology, Geely has developed next-generation high-performance batteries, specifically the Aegis Golden Brick ultra-short blade batteries. When paired with batteries that support charging rates of up to 12C, vehicles can reportedly transition from a 10% to a 70% charge in approximately four and a half minutes, and reach as much as 97% in about eight minutes and 40 seconds under optimal conditions.
AI Integration for Enhanced Control
This system goes beyond mere power outputs. With the integration of AI technology, Geely's charging solution utilizes the Xingrui PowerMind model, developed with StepFun, to manage intricate interactions between the vehicle, battery, and charging infrastructure. The technology is equipped with three key functionalities: Extreme Charge, Smart Charge, and Auto Charge.
A standout feature is the predictive thermal management capability that can forecast and adjust charging power based on battery temperature fluctuations, aiming to maintain temperatures below 55°C and peaks below 65°C during high-power charging. Early testing indicates a Lynk & Co 10 reached a maximum charging power of 1,093 kW while maintaining a safe thermal profile throughout the charging process.
Battery Technology: Speed Meets Longevity
Critical to Geely’s strategy is its introduction of the inventive 12C battery technology. This cutting-edge design, employed in vehicles like the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001, is engineered to handle rapid charging without compromising the battery's lifespan. Through a unique lithium-ion pulse regeneration process, Geely claims it can extend the battery cycle life by up to 20%, although specific longevity figures have yet to be disclosed.
Geely's strategy doesn't only cater to high-performance vehicles. It is also in the process of developing a 6C variant of its Ultra Short Blade Battery aimed at more budget-friendly models, facilitating a charging time from 10% to 70% in around eight minutes and 25 seconds.
Ambitious Infrastructure Expansion
To make this new technology widely accessible, Geely plans to deploy over 100,000 charging stations across China by the end of 2027, with more than 50,000 units of the Smart Charge technology. This infrastructure rollout is essential for driving user acceptance and ensuring that EV owners have reliable access to fast chargers.
As an additional incentive for early adopters, Geely is offering a charging allowance for new vehicle purchasers, which amounts to 1,000 yuan ($150) per year for two years. Furthermore, the warranty on batteries for new and existing models has been increased from 150,000 km (about 93,205 miles) to 200,000 km (approximately 124,274 miles) over eight years.
The Competitive EV Charging Environment
Geely's advancements come at a time of fierce competition among Chinese automakers and battery manufacturers, all vying to reduce EV charging times to levels comparable with refueling conventional gasoline vehicles. Companies like BYD are also aggressively expanding their charging networks, targeting around 20,000 Flash Charging stations by 2026.
What stands out in Geely’s approach is not just the focus on achieving higher power outputs but also the integration of AI capabilities and battery management strategies aimed at sustainable, rapid charging. If adopted widely, these advancements have the potential to make charging as quick as a typical gas station stop — possibly adding hundreds of miles of range in just minutes.
In summary, Geely’s 2,250 kW Smart Charge technology may well represent a pivotal shift in the push toward faster EV charging infrastructures, reflecting a crucial evolution in meeting the demands of electric vehicle users.
