The JAECOO 7 reclaims its spot as the UK's best-selling car, signaling a notable expansion of Chinese brands in the UK's automotive market.

JAECOO 7 Tops UK Sales Charts Again Amidst Surge in Chinese Automakers

The JAECOO 7 has once again captured the title of UK's best-selling new car, achieving an impressive 10,813 registrations in September 2026. This achievement not only signifies the JAECOO 7's appeal but also reflects the growing presence of Chinese automotive brands in a market traditionally dominated by European and Asian competitors, as reported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

This is the JAECOO 7's second monthly sales victory this year, having also led in March. Although JAECOO is relatively new in the UK, having launched in January 2025, it has quickly carved out a significant niche within the competitive car market.

Competitive Advantage Against Established Brands

In September, the JAECOO 7 outperformed several established vehicles, including the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Puma. The performance of the JAECOO 7 is part of a broader success for its parent company, OMODA&JAECOO UK, which celebrated its most successful month since entering the UK market with **22,296 total vehicle registrations**, corresponding to a **6.37% market share**.

To put things into perspective, sales more than doubled from September 2025, when OMODA&JAECOO saw a mere 10,812 registrations. The JAECOO brand alone contributed 4.3% to the market, an improvement from 2.07% a year prior, with OMODA following suit at 2.07%, rising from 1.38%.

The notable September figures correlate with the release of new number plates in the UK, a time when vehicle registrations typically see a pronounced uptick.

Chinese Automakers Make Their Mark

The JAECOO 7's impressive sales highlight a significant trend within the automotive sector: the accelerated growth of Chinese brands. In September, they collectively claimed approximately 23% of the UK's new car sales, with JAECOO at 4.3%, Chery at 2.8%, and BYD hitting 5.75%. This upward trajectory speaks volumes about how these manufacturers are transitioning from being relative outsiders to becoming formidable contenders in the UK market.

Notably, the UK's market conditions have been more favorable for Chinese automakers compared to the European Union, which has faced additional tariffs on several Chinese electric vehicle models. This regulatory difference allows Chinese brands to remain price competitive while introducing increasingly sophisticated products.

The Allure of the JAECOO 7

The JAECOO 7's popularity hinges on its blend of appearance, features, and affordability. Often compared to the Range Rover Velar, it has attracted attention for delivering a premium aesthetic without the exorbitant price tag. Starting around £30,000, it offers a high-quality interior and a comprehensive set of standard features, which resonates with cost-conscious consumers, especially as economic pressures on household budgets persist.

Additionally, the model's availability in plug-in hybrid variants enhances its appeal, providing an attractive alternative for buyers who aren't ready to fully commit to battery-electric options.

Electrified Vehicles on the Rise

September marked a watershed moment for electrified vehicles in the UK, with battery-electric cars capturing 28.3% of new sales, reflecting a considerable increase from the previous year. Moreover, plug-in hybrids also demonstrated significant growth, now commanding a 17% market share.

Within OMODA&JAECOO's own registrations, electrified vehicles accounted for over three-quarters of total sales. Plug-in hybrids made up **55.7%**, while full hybrids represented **10.4%**, and battery-electric vehicles at **10%**. Meanwhile, traditional petrol cars sank to just **23.9%** of September sales, a dip from the prior year’s 37.5%.

JAECOO's Rapid Expansion and Support

The success of the JAECOO 7 is not an isolated phenomenon; it's backed by substantial growth in OMODA&JAECOO's retail network, which expanded from **81 to 146 locations** within a year. The product lineup has also broadened from three families and five powertrains to six families and 12 powertrain options, introducing models such as the OMODA 5, 7, 9, and JAECOO 5, 7, 8.

Recognizing the crucial role of customer support for a fledgling brand, OMODA&JAECOO has enhanced its aftersales services by extending its **seven-year/100,000-mile warranty** to cover additional components. They also amplified their partnership with the RAC for better roadside and warranty assistance.

The Challenges Ahead for JAECOO

Despite its booming sales, the JAECOO 7 is not without challenges. The vehicle has recently received negative feedback in a What Car? reliability survey, ranking among the UK's least reliable cars due to electronic system issues. With reports of extended repair times, this aspect may pose a significant hurdle as the number of JAECOO vehicles on the roads rises.

Attracting buyers through low pricing is essential, but long-term dependability, accessibility of parts, and dealer support will ultimately dictate the ability of JAECOO and similar brands to maintain market momentum.
