BMW Group's electric vehicle sales in Europe surged 37.5% in Q3 2026, despite global delivery challenges, indicating strong demand for its electric lineup.

The BMW Group is experiencing a significant upswing in electric vehicle sales across Europe and the U.S., despite facing tough market conditions in China and a global drop in deliveries during the first nine months of 2026. Notably, battery-electric models made up over one-third of the group’s overall vehicle sales in Europe during the third quarter, reflecting a growing consumer preference for electric models.
In total, the BMW Group delivered more than 1.7 million vehicles worldwide from January to September 2026, revealing a 4.9% decline compared to the same timeframe last year. However, the company's performance diverged in key markets, with a 4.5% increase in Europe and a 3.4% rise in the United States, showcasing its resilience despite broader industry challenges.
Electric Vehicle Sales Surge in Europe
Looking specifically at the electric vehicle sector, BMW Group saw a notable rise of 37.5% in fully electric vehicle sales in Europe during Q3 2026, with a total of 81,941 units sold, contributing to a global delivery figure of 110,257 fully electric vehicles, which increased by 7.2% overall.
Electric vehicles now represent 34.7% of all BMW Group vehicle sales in Europe. Germany alone recorded an impressive growth rate, with battery-electric vehicle deliveries soaring by 38.5%. Such numbers underline the central role that electric vehicles are playing in BMW's European strategy, even when global sales are challenged.
Jochen Goller, a Board member at BMW AG focused on customer engagement and sales, emphasized the company's stability in Europe and the U.S. amidst ongoing market difficulties. He pointed to robust consumer interest in electric models like the BMW iX3 and the newly launched BMW X5, along with a solid order book for their fully electric offerings.
Positive Trends Amid Global Sales Decline
Despite a global decline, the BMW brand reported delivering approximately 1.5 million vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, a drop of 6.4%. Yet, the brand saw growth in Europe, with a 1.4% increase in sales, and an impressive 4.3% growth in the U.S., benefitting from strong demand for BMW X models.
Contrastingly, the situation in China was less favorable, with sales plummeting by 21.2%, highlighting the significant hurdles affecting that market. In response, BMW plans to launch a China-specific version of the BMW iX3 this November, which could bolster its position in one of the largest electric vehicle markets globally.
BWM M GmbH, the brand's performance division, registered 148,510 vehicle deliveries during early 2026, marking a slight decline of 6.1%—a figure that reflects the overall market’s downturn, particularly in China.
MINI’s Contributions to Sales Growth
Meanwhile, the MINI brand showcased promising results, delivering 220,247 vehicles from January to September 2026, marking a 6.8% increase year-over-year. The shift towards electrification has been a key driver, with fully electric units accounting for 37.2% of total deliveries for MINI.
Particularly successful have been popular models such as the John Cooper Works and the limited-edition MINI Paul Smith, which have helped fuel this growth. Additionally, MINI expects its innovative Countryman Untamed Edition to contribute further to overall performance.
Mixed Results from Other Divisions
Though electric vehicles are performing well, not all segments within the BMW Group are reflecting similar growth. Rolls-Royce saw a decline, delivering 3,592 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, dropping by 12.4%. BMW Motorrad also faced a downturn, with 149,452 motorcycles and scooters sold, marking a 6.1% decrease.
The mixed performance across BMW Group’s brands highlights both the strong demand for electric offerings and the ongoing pressure in traditional segments. With electric vehicle sales rising significantly, the upcoming Neue Klasse models are anticipated to further enhance BMW’s electric vehicle lineup.
As the company moves forward, the challenge will be to sustain the electric momentum while also improving market performance in China and stabilizing overall global sales. The current surge in electric vehicle demand suggests a promising outlook for the brand, particularly within the European market.
